Painted Wolf Alpha Male by MorkelErasmus Painted Wolf Alpha Male by MorkelErasmus
A friend and I spent two afternoons photographing a pack of wild dogs all by ourself in a sandy riverbed in the Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe last week.

I will never forget the 2nd afternoon, when we leopard-crawled for over 40 meters to get within good shooting distance. Just before we had to leave, the Alpha Male got up and stalked towards us, growled a couple of times, took in our scent, and then lied down about 7 meters from us, relaxed again. An absolutely thrilling moment!! I was lying on my belly for this one.

I don't have any noteworthy images in my portfolio of this endangered species, and am so stoked to have come back from Mana Pools with a truckload of images from low angles like this, with an unobstructed view of the canines.

I was about to ask how did you get this kind of picture quality with ISO 4000, then I looked at the camera.
It's a picture a bit outside my experience zone equipment-base, but nevertheless, I'm most impressed.

Hello! I will hopefully be headed down to Zimbabwe to work with the dogs in a little over a year. I'm trying to invest in some new lenses for my camera  to use down there :)

I see you use a Nikon. I currently own the Pentax K-r. What kind of lens, etc would you recommend I take with me?

Thanks!

Good luck!!
I don't know the Pentax range that well. At least a 300mm f4 lens?

Thanks!
That's the lens I'm using currently. It's a pretty good one, but my shots are never as 'crisp' like yours for example. The more I've been digging into it, the more I think it's just my camera. XD I was trying to blame the lens hoping to not have to invest in a more expensive camera.

Thanks for replying though!

That lens will never be really as sharp as a prime telephoto lens which costs about 9 times as much ;)
You can always take it to the official service centre and have it calibrated. Helped a lot with my copy when I was shooting with it.

I'll give that option a go :)

*sigh* I figured the telephoto lens would cost me an arm and a leg ... and a kidney ... haha. One day!
